What Is Considered a Hazardous Tree?

A hazardous tree—also called a “danger tree”— is a tree that poses an imminent or immediate risk to people, infrastructure, buildings, and other property. Trees provide many benefits but can grow very large and tall and deteriorate over time. Property owners should monitor their trees and those nearby for signs of danger. Below are some things to look out for:

  • Power Line Interference: Trees growing too close to power lines have the potential to cause power interruptions or outages when branches contact overhead lines. Furthermore, sparking or arcing from a power line to a tree branch can cause a fire—and trees, thanks in part to their high water content, are electrically conductive, putting people at risk of severe injury or death by electrocution. Never climb or prune a tree that is close to or making contact with power lines.
  • Structural Damage: Trees can develop structural weaknesses that, over time, may cause some or all of the trees to collapse. Internal decay of the trunk or major branches, tree cankers, damaged or rotten roots, and weakened forks at the trunk or between large branches all increase the likelihood of a tree becoming hazardous.
  • Orientation: Trees do not always grow perfectly straight. It should be considered hazardous if yours leans 15 or more degrees from vertical, as a leaning tree is more likely to collapse. Trees that grew tall with a lean do not pose as significant a risk as those that were once straight and later began to lean—though they should still be monitored.
  • Insects, Drought, and Disease: Pests, persistently dry conditions, and disease can all contribute to a tree’s degradation, causing physical damage and limiting its ability to transport nutrients and sustain itself.
